Is there a Recognition of Prior Learning Process?

Yes, any previous relevant qualifications or experience that you have gained prior to beginning the internship can be put towards Recognised Prior Learning.

What training and qualifications does the Internship Program involve?

The Internship program consists of a number of training methods. Among these are theoretical based-training, practical training, on-the-job-training and work experience.

As a Registered Training Organisation, Outward Bound, in conjunction with other training providers, has the ability to deliver the following Nationally Recognised Qualifications:

  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Bronze Medallion
  • Statements of Attainment in bushwalking, navigation, ropes course, rock climbing, abseiling, caving and four wheel driving, among others.
  • Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation

What does the Internship fee cover? - East Coast Program

The Internship fee is currently $10,500 for Australian applicants, and $15,000 for International applicants.

This covers:

  • All training valued at $7,500
  • Accommodation valued at $1,620
  • Food valued at $2,500 (meals are provided whilst on training blocks, you are required to provide for yourself whilst on leave)
  • An allowance of $800 over the 8 months (paid per fortnight)
  • Transport to and from operational areas
  • Staff discounts at outdoor retail outlets
  • National Park fees
  • Electricity, local phone calls and internet access.

What are my options after the Internship Program?

In the seventh month of the program you will be given an opportunity to apply for a 'Group Instructor' role with Outward Bound Australia.

Your application will be assessed on five primary criteria. These are skills, experience, training and qualifications, personal attributes and attitude/performance/behaviour. Many of the sub-criteria will have been obtained during your Internship program.

There are a limited number of vacanices available for permanent full-time instructors. There are alternative options available such as seasonal or casual work opportunities.

How do I apply for the Internship?

Each year we have two start dates for the Internship Program.

East Coast
  • January (applications close in November and
  • July (applications close in early-May).
