Certificate IV

Outward Bound delivers a Certificate IV in Outdoor Education via an internship. By living on base and being immersed in Outward Bounds culture, students get a strong understanding of life as an instructor in addition to technical qualifications.

Overview of the Internship

internsThe Internship program is an intensive 8-month residential Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation program which equips people with all the necessary skills, experience and qualifications to become an Outdoor Education Instructor.

As a Group Instructor you will lead groups in personal development, using the outdoors as a medium, and experiential education as the method (learning by doing).

By the end of the program you will have developed a broad range of technical skills such as climbing, rafting, wilderness first aid, navigation, search and rescue, 4 Wheel Driving and a whole lot more. Your technical abilities will be complemented by a strong set of people skills such as team building, coaching, behaviour management and facilitation techniques.

Some of the things that make our program unique not only to Australia, but internationally, include: work experience being built into the course, travelling to regions throughout the country to learn, being viewed as ‘staff in training’ rather than students and becoming immersed in our community which has a strong international mix of people.

These elements combine to ensure your internship is an experience of a lifetime, full of fun, adventure and personal growth as well as a springboard for life.

The Registered Training Organisation arm of Outward Bound is called The Australian Outward Bound Foundation. Outward Bound Australia is a registered provider of education to international students with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS membership number 02376G).

Who is suited to an internship?

If you are passionate about developing your potential and fit one of these categories then the internship is for you.

1. Your heart is set on forging a career in the outdoor industry. Whether your interest in the outdoors has been lifelong or newly acquired, one thing is certain; you want to make a living doing what you love.

2. You are looking for a gap year or life changing experience which will become a platform for the rest of your life. You understand that emotional intelligence is four times more critical to success in life than your IQ. You see the internship as a way to develop leadership, communication and people skills. You are also excited about the prospect of gaining confidence, self-belief and the opportunity to really discover yourself.

3. You are after something more than an amazing experience, but are not necessarily set on a career as an instructor. You may be see it has a handy skill to have while you pursue your burning interest or university degree. Perhaps you would like to do more outdoor and adventure activities in your leisure time and see the internship as a way to build your technical skills.

I always loved the outdoors and wanted to find out who I was and what I wanted to do with my life. At Outward Bound I was surrounded by people who were following their own path. This convinced me to do the same and now I am attempting to be a professional snowboarder. The internship has changed me, given me the courage to follow my dream and provided me with a skill I can use to help me get there.
