Summit to Sea 2010

On January 11th, 15 participants began a 650km adventure across three states for this years’ summit to sea. Last week Outward Bound’s CEO, Darren Black visited the participants as they reached the half way point of their journey.

Despite overcoming some serious obstacles and treacherous weather conditions on Lake Eucumbene, Darren said the group was in good spirits and enjoying the challenge.

“The group experienced extraordinary conditions on Eucumbene, with snow, torrential rain and the hot sun all in one day,” Darren said.

The participants survived that challenge and went on to scale Australia’s three highest mountains over the course of two days. They started by summiting Mt Twynam (2,196 metres), then scaled Mt Townsend (2,209 metres) and then Mt Kosciuszko (2,229 metres).

“Outside of the challenging conditions, things are going very well as I left the group they were preparing to paddle for two days down the Snowy River,” Darren said.

On the 4th of February (day 25) the group reached their final destination, Bass Strait. As they arrived, the participants ran into the ocean as it surged over them. They were overcome with a combination of exhaustion and jubilation at what they had achieved.
